Em wasn’t sure what she wanted more—a hot shower or a soft bed. Both were options at the safehouse. Jax had told her that it used to be an old military compound, but it had been overhauled and renovated to serve as a discreet getaway for Columbian government officials.

"I know you're tired," Jax said as if reading her mind, "but we need to touch up the cuts on you, and it would be a lot easier and safer if you were clean before we got started.”

Em nearly laughed. “Did you forget I’m the doctor here?”

He placed his hands on his hips, frowning at her. “You’re so tired I’m not sure you’d be able to tell your right from your left.”

“That’s a pretty lame excuse for trying to pretend like you have more medical knowledge than me.” A giggle escaped her. I must be far more exhausted than I thought. I never giggle.

He shook his head and pointed her in the direction of the bedrooms. He followed her to her door and waited until she closed the door firmly behind her. Once in the bedroom he'd assigned to her she began to shed her filthy, bloodied clothes. In the shower, the warmth from the water drummed away the tension in her shoulders, and she watched the dirt and blood wash down the drain. If she didn't concentrate on washing her hair and soaping up she'd fall asleep standing, leaning against the cool tile. She rinsed off quickly, exhaustion making her weak.

They had been there more than half an hour and none of the rest of the team had come behind them. They had been moving significantly slower than she and Jax had been, so wouldn’t worry too much—yet. Still, she couldn’t stop her mind from wondering what would happen to them if they were caught.

She stepped out of the shower and cringed as her feet touched the terracotta flooring. The soles of her shoes were full of holes now, and her feet were sore from abuse. Picking her path gingerly across the floor, she made her way back to the bedroom and was surprised to see her clothes missing. On the bed was a large, white robe and a hastily scribbled note:

Em,

Had to take your clothes to be cleaned. The robe should work until your clothes are dry. Let me know when you need a hand with your cuts.

Jax’s name was scrawled below the message, and she smiled as she set it aside. Sliding into the robe felt good, the soft cotton smooth against her skin. She longed for a soft pair of slippers to place over her aching feet but knew it foolish to long for more than she had already been gifted. She shook her head at herself. She’d be damned if she let Jax think she had become a spoiled diva over the years they’d been parted.

The robe nearly wrapped around her twice but she didn’t mind, getting creative with the belt to keep the robe cinched tightly around her.
